Open Door Mission’s Educational Programming

Houston, Texas-based resident Nathaniel (Nate) Whittle attended Williams college where he earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and is presently studying to take actuarial examinations. Nathaniel Whittle has held numerous volunteering positions within the community including at the Open Door Mission in Houston, Texas, where he served from 2018 to 2019.

Open Door Mission operates as a non-profit, independent, faith-based organization focused on assisting men who are underprivileged, addicted, and disabled by using an evidence-based recovery and rehabilitation program. The organization’s Education Program, DoorWay to Knowledge, is an integral part of the organization’s programming and is focused on building each participant’s level of education.

Men participating in the Open Door Mission DoorWay Recovery Program are required to complete a specified amount of academic learning during their stay to learn the computer literacy skills required to prepare for more advanced education and employability. Each participant completes an educational assessment prior to having a customized academic curriculum designed for him. The Mission's education program also enables men who desire to complete their GED to study in a self-paced program with the assistance of tutors and to take the GED examination before they leave the Mission.
